VIDEO: How To Progress Single Leg Training As You Get Stronger: Split Squats and Lunges

Here's a short video on my coaching perspective on single leg training and how to progress through different variations of split squats and lunges over time. Progression in exercise selection is critical to maximizing the rate of improvement over time as it:

  1. Sets clients up for success by giving them something that's not too easy and not too hard.

  2. Allows clients to focus on building great technique habits and awareness that serve them well in the long term. Picking an exercise that's too challenging for your client's current level of ability will force them to muddle through it with sloppy technique while they try to complete the given reps. But by selecting exercises that they can perform well the client can begin to learn subtle differences in the movement and perfect the movement.

  3. Creates nice variation over time and a feeling of progress. When you change exercises in the program and tell them that they're ready for a new challenge, it makes the coach and client both feel happy with their accomplishments.
